چکیده

We consider many-particle diffusion in 2D colloidal suspensions with hydrodynamic interactions within a mode-coupling approach. We focus on the behaviour of the effective scaled collective diffusion coefficient DC(ρ)/D0 as a function of the density of the colloids ρ, where D0 is the single-particle diffusion coefficient. We find that DC(ρ) is strongly coupled to hydrodynamical conservation laws and is distinctly different from the purely dissipative case without hydrodynamic interactions, in that it may display a minimum at intermediate densities. Our results for the density dependence of DC(ρ)/D0 are in good agreement with recently published simulation data.

Divergence of the long-wavelength collective diffusion coefficient in quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional colloidal suspensions.

We report the results of experimental studies of the short-time-long-wavelength behavior of collective particle displacements in quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) and quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) colloid suspensions. Our results are reported via the q → 0 behavior of the hydrodynamic function H(q) that relates the effective collective diffusion coefficient D(e)(q), with the static structure factor S(q...

Time-dependent collective diffusion of colloidal particles.

We use a combination of numerical simulations and laboratory experiments to study the timedependent collective diffusion coefficient Dsq, td in concentrated colloidal suspensions. At short times, the particle configuration is frozen, and Dsq, td probes the temporal and spatial evolution of hydrodynamic interactions, via their effects on the particle velocities. We find that Dsq, td exhibits a s...

Hydrodynamic segregation in a bidisperse colloidal suspension in microchannel flow: A theoretical study.

Colloids in suspension exhibit shear-induced migration towards regions of low viscous shear. In dense bidisperse colloidal suspensions under pressure driven flow large particles can segregate in the center of a microchannel and the suspension partially demixes. To develop a theoretical understanding of these effects, we formulate a phenomenological model for the particle currents based on the w...

Surmounting barriers: The benefit of hydrodynamic interactions

– We experimentally and theoretically investigate the collective behavior of three colloidal particles that are driven by a constant force along a toroidal trap. Due to hydrodynamic interactions, a characteristic limit cycle is observed. When we additionally apply a periodic sawtooth potential, we find a novel caterpillar-like motional sequence that is dominated by hydrodynamic interactions and...

Influence of hydrodynamics on many-particle diffusion in 2D colloidal suspensions.

We study many-particle diffusion in 2D colloidal suspensions with full hydrodynamic interactions through a novel mesoscopic simulation technique. We focus on the behaviour of the effective scaled tracer and collective-diffusion coefficients DT(rho)/D0 and DC(rho)/D0 respectively, where D0 is the single-particle diffusion coefficient, as a function of the density of the colloids rho. At low Schm...
